A Challenge step is a step with tasks. To learn what a Challenge step is and where it fits, read Getting started. This page shows how to set up the intro, the tasks and each answer type.

Add an intro

The Intro is the first card in the strip. It is optional. If it is empty, players go straight to task 1.

You edit the intro like a Content step: add a cover, a name, narration and sections. To learn how the editor works, read Content editor.

Add and edit tasks

Select Add task at the bottom of the strip on the left. The Studio asks how players answer. Choose one of the six answer types. The new task goes to the end of the list and opens. A Challenge step can have as many tasks as you like.

Each task has three parts:

Task image
Optional. The image shows above the question. Without a task image, players see the cover of the step.
Question
You build it from sections, like in a Content step: Text, Image and Carousel. A question needs some text or an image.
Answer
Here you choose the answer type and enter the answer. The sections below explain each type.

Tasks have no narration, no points of their own and no hint field.

Change the answer type
Use Answer type at any time. The answer starts over: the Studio clears the options, the expected answer and the numbers, and it does not ask first. Your question stays. You can’t change the type of a photo task, and no other task can become a photo task.
Move a task
Drag a task card in the strip to a new place. You can also select the task, open the ⋮ menu in the panel header and use Move task earlier and Move task later. Players solve the tasks in the order of the strip.
Remove a task
Select the task, open the ⋮ menu in the panel header and select Remove task. The Studio does not ask you to confirm, except for a photo task with player photos: removing it deletes the photos for good, so the Studio asks when you save. If you remove a task by mistake, select Discard before you save.
Save your changes
All changes are drafts until you save. This includes new, removed and moved tasks, answers and images. One Save saves the intro, all tasks, the name and the cover of the step. Discard puts everything back.
Fix incomplete tasks
A task that is not finished gets a ! mark on its card. Hold the pointer over the mark to see what is missing. The step also shows what to fix, for example Needs at least one task.

Tries and score

Players get 3 tries for each task (photo tasks have none). You can’t change this number. A player can’t send the same answer twice, so a repeated answer never uses up a try.

When a player is right, the task ends. When a player is wrong 3 times, the player can look at the solution and go on. A task never blocks the player. Players can skip only photo tasks. Every task ends, and the player always goes on.

The score of a Challenge step is the number of tasks the player answered right, on any try. A right answer on the first try is worth the same as a right answer on the third try. Tasks have no points of their own. Photo tasks are never graded and do not count toward the score.

Single choice

Use this when players pick one option from a list and exactly one option is correct.

Options
Add at least two options with Add option. A new task starts with two empty options. Remove an option with its delete button.
Correct option
Mark the correct option. When you mark one, the Studio clears the mark on the others.
Order
Players see the options in the order you set. The app does not shuffle them.

The Studio marks the task as incomplete if it has fewer than two options or no correct option.

Multiple choice

Use this when players pick several options and one or more options are correct. The setup is the same as for Single choice, but you can mark more than one option as correct.

Right answer
The answer is right only when the player picks all the correct options and nothing else. There is no partial credit.

The Studio marks the task as incomplete if it has fewer than two options or no correct option.

Text answer

Use this when players type a short answer, for example a number they count or a word they find at the place. Enter it in Expected answer.

What does not matter
Upper and lower case. Spaces at the start and at the end.
What must match
Everything else must match exactly: spaces inside the answer, punctuation, accents and spelling.
One answer only
You can enter only one expected answer. The Studio has no list of alternatives.

Because only one spelling counts, choose answers that have one clear way to write them. Numbers and short words work best. The Studio marks the task as incomplete while the expected answer is empty.

Sort list

Use this when players put things in order, for example events in time or stops on a route. You enter the items in the correct order. The app shuffles them for the players.

Items
A Sort list has 2 to 8 items. Add items with Add item.
Text
Each item needs its own text, up to 80 characters. Two items with the same text are not allowed.
Image
Each item can have a square image next to its text. The image is optional.
Order
Drag an item by its handle to change its place. With the keyboard, select the handle, press Space, move the item with the arrow keys and press Space again.

A text over 80 characters stops you from saving. The other problems mark the task as incomplete.

Guess number

Use this when players estimate a number, for example a year, a height or a distance. Players move a slider to their guess. Close guesses score too, so players don’t have to hit the number exactly. Players don’t see a unit, so name the unit in the question.

Correct value
The number players should guess. It has to be on the slider.
From and To
The two ends of the slider. A new task starts with 0 and 100. To has to be higher than From.
Steps
How far the slider moves with each step. Choose 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 or 100. From, To and the correct value have to be multiples of the steps.
Tolerance
Optional. It decides how fast the score falls when a guess is off. Without a tolerance, only the exact number scores.

Every time a guess is off by the tolerance, 10% of the score goes away. So a guess that is off by 5 times the tolerance scores 50%, and a guess that is off by 10 times the tolerance or more scores 0%. The tolerance must be more than 0. You can use numbers with up to 2 decimals.

Under the fields, Scoring shows what a guess is worth. It has a chart and a list with exactly the correct value, values that are slightly off, and the values that are wrong. Look at it to check that the task is not too easy or too hard. It appears when the numbers above are correct.

The Studio marks the task as incomplete if a value is missing, if To is not higher than From, or if a value is not on the steps or not between From and To. The Studio shows which one and offers a quick fix when a value is between two steps. A value with more than 2 decimals, a value that is too large and a tolerance of 0 or less stop you from saving.

Photo

Use this when players take or pick a photo, for example a selfie at the place or a photo of a detail they found. You do not enter an answer. The photo task is never graded: there is no right or wrong, no tries and no score.

Skipping
Players can skip a photo task and go on.
Notice
Before their first photo task, players see the notice “The creator will see this photo.”
Where the photos are
The experience has a page Player photos in its menu. The menu item shows only when the experience has a photo task. There you see the photos of your players with the names they entered (or “Player”) and the date.
Photos in the answer panel
The answer panel of the task shows how many photos players sent, with a link to Player photos.
Delete a photo
On Player photos you can delete single photos. This cannot be undone.
One photo per player
Each player has one photo per task. A new photo replaces the old one.
Removing a photo task
Removing a photo task or deleting its step deletes the players’ photos for good. For a removed task, the Studio asks when you save. When you delete the step, the Studio asks right away and names the number of photos (Delete step and photos).
